Apostolic Women
The Samaritan Woman
The first to preach Jesus in Samaria, the words of the "woman
at the well" spread all through the region. People came from all over to
hear the man who had spoken with what had to be supernatural insight
from God. Many Samaritans believed on the Christ because of her
testimony and evangelism!
"The woman then left her waterpot, and went her way into the city, and
saith to the men, Come, see a man, which told me all things that ever I
did: is not this the Christ? And many of the Samaritans of that city
believed on him for the saying of the woman, which testified, He told me
all that ever I did... So when the Samaritans were come unto him, they
besought him that he would tarry with them: and he abode there two days.
And many more believed because of his own word; And said unto the
woman, Now we believe, not because of thy saying: for we have heard him
ourselves, and know that this is indeed the Christ, the Saviour of the
world."
Hannah
Hannah’s petition to God was so intimate, that though her lips
moved, no sound was uttered. She was barren, and she fervently beseeched
the Lord that she would have a son, vowing that when she did, she would
commit him to the service of God. Though her fervent prayers were
misunderstood by Eli the priest, the faith of her heart resounded in the
ears of God. Her prayers would be answered as she gave birth to Samuel.
Her spirit filled with thankfulness to God declared this prophetic
prayer, uttering, for the first time recorded in the Bible, the revered
title “His Anointed.”
“My heart rejoiceth in the LORD, mine horn is exalted in
the LORD: my mouth is enlarged over mine enemies; because I rejoice in
thy salvation. There is none holy as the LORD: for there is none beside
thee: neither is there any rock like our God... He raiseth up the poor
out of the dust, and lifteth up the beggar from the dunghill, to set
them among princes, and to make them inherit the throne of glory: for
the pillars of the earth are the LORD'S, and he hath set the world upon
them. He will keep the feet of his saints, and the wicked shall be
silent in darkness; for by strength shall no man prevail. The
adversaries of the LORD shall be broken to pieces; out of heaven shall
he thunder upon them: the LORD shall judge the ends of the earth; and he
shall give strength unto his king, and exalt the horn of His anointed.”
Elizabeth
Just the simple salutation of Mary to Elizabeth caused an
internal explosion, as the baby within Elizabeth reacted to Mary’s
voice. Elizabeth, so filled with the Holy Ghost, responded with these
words infused with faith.
“And it came to pass, that, when Elisabeth heard the
salutation of Mary, the babe leaped in her womb; and Elisabeth was
filled with the Holy Ghost: And she spake out with a loud voice, and
said, Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy
womb. And whence is this to me, that the mother of my Lord should come
to me? For, lo, as soon as the voice of thy salutation sounded in mine
ears, the babe leaped in my womb for joy. And blessed is she that
believed: for there shall be a performance of those things which were
told her from the Lord.”
Mary
Hand-picked by God and called “highly favored” by His
messenger, Mary was a young girl when she spoke the fearless words of
faith, “Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy
word!” receiving for the human race, the Savior of the world.
“And Mary said, My soul doth magnify the Lord, And my
spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour. For he hath regarded the low
estate of his handmaiden: for, behold, from henceforth all generations
shall call me blessed. For he that is mighty hath done to me great
things; and holy is his name. And his mercy is on them that fear him
from generation to generation. He hath shewed strength with his arm; he
hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts. He hath put
down the mighty from their seats, and exalted them of low degree. He
hath filled the hungry with good things; and the rich he hath sent empty
away. He hath holpen his servant Israel, in remembrance of his mercy;
As he spake to our fathers, to Abraham, and to his seed for ever.”
Anna
A prophet of the Lord, Anna, was one of only two individuals
who had the honor of prophesying over Jesus, The Christ, as a small
child.
“And there was one Anna, a prophetess, the daughter of
Phanuel, of the tribe of Aser: she was of a great age, and had lived
with an husband seven years from her virginity; And she was a widow of
about fourscore and four years, which departed not from the temple, but
served God with fastings and prayers night and day. And she coming in
that instant gave thanks likewise unto the Lord, and spake of him to all
them that looked for redemption in Jerusalem.”
The Women at the Tomb
Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of James arrived at Christ’s
tomb just as the light of day began to pour over the horizon. It was
only two days previous that Mary had watched the soldiers heave the
heavy wooden cross into it’s painful vertical position. Now,
interrupting the sadness in their hearts, the Angel of the Lord met them
at the the tomb, declaring that Christ was not dead, but He was risen.
In His resurrected splendor, Jesus appeared to them, commissioning them
to go and tell His brethren.
“In the end of the sabbath, as it began to dawn toward
the first day of the week, came Mary Magdalene and the other Mary to see
the sepulchre. And, behold, there was a great earthquake: for the angel
of the Lord descended from heaven, and came and rolled back the stone
from the door, and sat upon it. His countenance was like lightning, and
his raiment white as snow: And for fear of him the keepers did shake,
and became as dead men. And the angel answered and said unto the women,
Fear not ye: for I know that ye seek Jesus, which was crucified. He is
not here: for he is risen, as he said. Come, see the place where the
Lord lay. And go quickly, and tell his disciples that he is risen from
the dead; and, behold, he goeth before you into Galilee; there shall ye
see him: lo, I have told you. And they departed quickly from the
sepulchre with fear and great joy; and did run to bring his disciples
word. And as they went to tell his disciples, behold, Jesus met them,
saying, All hail. And they came and held him by the feet, and worshipped
him. Then said Jesus unto them, Be not afraid: go tell my brethren that
they go into Galilee, and there shall they see me.”
